If you're from the UK and you believe in freedom of speech and an uncensored internet, you really need to sign this petition. There are others floating about, but that particular one is the best way to ensure that your voice gets heard. It's hosted on the directgov website and addresses parliament directly. If it gets more than 100,000 signatures, it becomes eligible for discussion in the House of Commons.

Everyone's been getting so worked up over SOPA -- and rightly so -- that ACTA seems to have slipped under the radar. This is hugely problematic, because ACTA is a similar bill, but it has the potential to be far more damaging than SOPA ever could be.

Some people seem to have this misconception that ACTA is the 'European SOPA', but that simply isn't true. It's a global treaty, and it's already been signed by eight countries, including the US, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore. Europe votes on Thursday. If they vote 'no', the bill will have to be taken back to the drawing board and reformulated, which should buy us some time at the very least.

If you think this doesn't affect you, you're wrong. If ACTA passes, it could well signal the end of the internet as we know it, and that isn't an exaggeration. It's not just about watching movies and television online. If ACTA passes, sites like YouTube, Livejournal, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and even Google and Wikipedia could become impossible to maintain. ACTA would allow ISPs to monitor your net activity and cut off internet access for your entire household if one person is suspected of breaching copyright. Think Big Brother is Watching. I don't think I need to emphasize just how damaging it can be to be without internet access in this day and age, when we rely so heavily on technology.

It's not only bloggers and fandom that would be affected, either. Small businesses, independent film-makers and unsigned musicians who have previously found their niche online would also suffer hugely, and would be at risk of being bullied into submission by Hollywood and multinational corporations under accusations of copyright infringement. All those artists who found fame by uploading covers of songs to YouTube would never have had the opportunity to do so under ACTA, as those cover versions would be prohibited.

I know the internet has its problems, but to my mind it's the single greatest invention to come out of modern times, and it would be an absolute travesty if we were to lose that now. From a personal point of view, I can't even put into words how important this is to me. I've met some of my closest friends through the internet and online fandom, people whom I would likely never have met without it, and it's given me this amazing social support system. I don't want that to end here, and I want to preserve it for future generations so that they can have the same experience and opportunities I've been given through my online interactions.

I know that opinions on the seriousness of copyright infringement and online piracy vary wildly, but that isn't really the point. Internet giants such as Google are opposed to this bill, and it's pretty safe to say that they're not in favor of copyright infringement, as anyone who's ever had a fanvid taken down from YouTube will be painfully aware. Whatever your stance on copyright, this isn't the way to go about dealing with it. This is dangerous legislation that impeaches on some of our most basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and freedom of speech.

So if you're from the UK, please, please sign the petition. If you hail from elsewhere in the world, there may well be similar movements in your own country, but I think the most effective thing anybody can do right now is to keep talking about this. Talk about it on Livejournal, on Twitter, on Tumblr, on Facebook, and anywhere else you can think of. Make sure this issue is never far from people's minds. The internet is an amazingly powerful tool: let's utilize it while we still have the chance.

Please re-post and spread the word :)

SAY NO TO ACTA!

Please consider re-posting this, especially if you have a large proportion of UK flisties. And please consider spreading the word via other platforms: Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, your own personal network.

Who can resist book lists? Not me, that's for sure! This list is the NPR Audience Picks of the 100 Best Beach Books Ever.

It's the usual drill: Bold the ones you've read. If you remember reading them on a beach, then italicize them as well! (No, there's no code for indicating books you've started, or want to read, or heard of; that stuff's for sissies. You read it, or you didn't.) Give us your count at the end!

I opened it right away and took pictures of the 'in the box' view...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! My Secret Santa, Angela, just made my day!

Ooh, I would very much like to find a (good) animated icon of Jim from the May 6, 2010 The Office episode 06.24 ("The Cover Up")* where he winks at the camera in the first couple minutes of the episode.

Anyone know where I can find that?

Rebecca is dog sitting for her boss, Mr. Sheridan, and loses the dog. She brings in a replacement dog, Satan, and Mr. Sheridan comes home early and goes to say hi to the dog in the other room. Sam comes in with the lost dog.

Sam: "Sammy to the rescue!"
Rebecca: "Sam, get that mutt out of here! Sheridan's in the kitchen with Satan."
Sam: "This is no time for folk singing!"

If you follow somebody (e.g. @username) on twitter who doesn't follow you back, but you make a tweet that begins with @username (or even has @username somewhere in the tweet), does that tweet show up on their reading list?

If not, other than a direct message, is there a way to get somebody on twitter to realize you're directing a tweet towards them if they're not following you?

I just finished watching the season finale of House.

I liked the ending, though I was spoiled for two parts of it, so it wasn't all that shocking to me like I would've hoped it would be.

And as the episode progressed, I kind of kept looking at the various shots and camera angles thinking, "That right there would make a good icon. Ooh, and that shot there, too!"

So mainly I was impressed with the camera work.

Well done, House crew!

I've been meaning to do this for a while and I kept forgetting.

DISCLAIMER: I am not being paid for this entry. This is purely a 'customer satisfied' post.

Dude.

I'm recommending that if you ever need to buy "wireless, cellular, iDen, handheld or personal digital assistant products", buy from Wireless Galaxy. I needed to buy a new cell phone battery a few weeks ago and I found Wireless Galaxy via a google search.

Pros to buying the battery from WG:
  • Inexpensive battery especially when I comparison shopped
  • Free USPS shipping
  • I did not pay for the tracking, but I got an e-mail anyway with a tracking number in it.
  • I bought the battery on a Friday afternoon and when I checked the tracking on Monday, it showed that it had arrived in Orlando already (I didn't actually get it in my hands until Tuesday, but that's a result of the post office not getting it to me until then; still, it arrived in my town on that Monday)

    Cons:
  • None that I can think of

  • So I really highly recommend this store.

What kind of stinks is that I had been meaning to do this post for a while and there was another store I was going to recommend with WG, and it's been so long now that I can't remember. =/

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And this year, I am participating in "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer," sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" is a 5K walk where the participants raise money for breast cancer research.

The firm I work for has a team put together for the walk on October 18 and we are trying to raise $5,000. My personal goal is to raise $500.

Please consider donating even just a little bit of money to help fund this very important research. Donations may be made online or a form can be printed out to be mailed in.

My donation page is here: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/lea724

The LJ strike was supposed to happen this past Friday(ish, depending on your location). No clue if it actually did or not. I'm still getting caught up on posts from this past Thursday.

A few of you on my flist said that you'd be participating in the strike. Personally, even if I had been caught up on reading my flist in time to participate, I would not have.

It feels a bit like the chain letters you get telling you to not buy gas on one certain day and that'll show TPTB! Except it doesn't.

The best explanation of how I feel about LJ at the moment and why I'm probably going to stick it out to the end was written by [info]zoethe at her journal. Go on over there. The entry is a quick read and it hits the nail on the head.

I was in Borders today and saw a book on their new release table that was a collection of essays from various comedic people. The theme of the book was something like "I actually learned something from my girlfriend" and one of the authors who contributed an essay was Stephen Colbert.

And yet, I can't find the book on amazon. Or when I google it.

Anybody seen/heard of this book and can let me know the title?

Somehow the fact that I'm going to be in the same part of town as that Borders again tomorrow isn't enough for me to just wait and look at it then...

    Well, shoot.

LJ recently updated their tag policy where you can only have 1,000 tags associated with your journal (if anyone knows where that update came from, I can't remember and would love to take a look at the comments again).

No problem, thought I. I'm nowhere near that.

Well, in a sense, that's true. I'm just nowhere near that in the wrong direction. I copied and pasted all of my tags into Word and had it count them for me. I have created 1,798 tags and the last entry that pops up with tags on my journal is from the end of November whereas the newest entries have zip.

I guess this means I need to remove at least 798 tags (*groan*) to get them to show up again. That totally sucks. Perm users should have as many as they want. Blah.

ETA: Okay, the link where the news about the tagging limit is here (thanks, [info]trailer_spot!) Also, I just finished reading through all of the comments on that entry and came across a couple of gems.

One is that whereas there used to be a 100-entry limit per viewing tags (that is, if you have a tag called "movies" and you made 101 entries, when you clicked on the tag name to view those entries, you'd only see the most recent 100 entries), that limit has been raised to 1,000. Information about that is here.

Two is that for the problem I had been having with my newest entries' tags not showing up, if I edit the entry and resave the tags on it, they'll show up. Unfortunately, I closed the URL link that gave support for that and I can't find it again. Gah.

Three isn't a "gem" moment. It's that just to clarify, it's 1,000 different tags that are allowed. Support for that is found here.

    Woot!

Free advance movie screenings all over the U.S. and Canada right here.

I just finished getting free tickets to The Savages and Juno. Sweeney Todd, unfortunately, is already completely sold out for the advance screenings in my area.

Read this in a Newsweek article from a few weeks ago and found it interesting:

Jean Decety, a psychologist at the University of Chicago, compared a group of doctors with laypeople, watching a video of patients receiving a painful acupuncture treatment. In the laypeople, parts of the brain associated with pain and with empathy were activated, but in doctors those circuits were suppressed, Decety found. Instead, they showed activity in areas associated with logical thinking. Decety said he wasn’t surprised by Davis’s experience.

"Doctors see people dying all the time," he said, "and if they couldn’t modulate their emotions, they couldn’t get through the day."

I didn't realize quite how much I missed The Daily Show until watching the above video.

C'mon, give the writers the money that's their right and let them get back to work! Sheesh.
